Eight-year-old Amber loves the Old West. She dreams of marrying a cowboy one day, living on a dude ranch with 200 horses and being a mom to 17 children.
This story is about Amber!
Amber's western dreams were nearly corralled when she and her guardian, Liz, learned the little girl had cancer. But thanks to the support of donors like you, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is helping Amber and other children gallop into their futures at full speed.
This holiday season, you can help children such as Amber who are battling cancer when you make a donation to St. Jude. Your gift can be even more meaningful when you choose to make a donation in honor or memory of a friend or loved one-making your donation a gift for the people in your life and a gift for the children of St. Jude. That is the essence of the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign which asks the public to "Give thanks for the healthy kids in your life, and give to those who are not." And by giving, you will help make a difference in the lives of children around the world ... children such as Amber.
In 2008, a lump appeared on Amber's head after a fall while roughhousing with her brother. Like any good parent, Liz, put an ice pack on the little girl's head to reduce the swelling, topping it with a kiss to make it all better.
But mysteriously, the lump was still there the next day. Concerned, Liz and Amber headed for her pediatrician, but the doctor could not make a determination. Within days, however, a second bump appeared on Amber's head, growing along with the first one. Soon the original bump had tripled in size. A biopsy of the lumps revealed something that a simple kiss could not heal. Amber had cancer.
"There's fear when you hear the word 'cancer,'" Liz said. "Fear that you're going to lose a child. But I thought to myself, 'I have got to focus on getting Amber better. I cannot break down. I cannot picture her dead because she's living right now.'"
The hospital where Amber was being seen gave Liz two recommendations: Amber could receive treatment at the local children's hospital or they could refer her to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
"I had seen the St. Jude TV commercials," Liz said, "and it meant hope to me."
St. Jude freely flew Liz and Amber to Memphis a few days later where doctors diagnosed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive soft tissue tumor that can arise anywhere in the body. The main tumor was located in Amber's calf but cancer was riddled throughout the little girl's body. At St. Jude, she began a protocol alternating chemotherapy and targeted radiation.
Now Amber is back home, singing and dancing and dreaming of her life on the ranch that was made possible through the caring and compassion of the American public.
